IELTS for UKVI versus IELTS Academic: which one for a UK student visa

Direct answer

Most Indian students do not need IELTS for UKVI. A university that is a Higher Education Provider with a track record can accept normal IELTS Academic, or its own assessment, for a degree-level course. IELTS for UKVI is required only when the Home Office itself must see a Secure English Language Test.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Check the sponsor type on your offer letter

If the university is a Higher Education Provider with a track record of compliance, it can assess your English itself for a degree-level course and write that on the CAS. Then any IELTS Academic result the university accepts is enough, and no UKVI test is needed.

  2. Step 2: Check the course level

Below degree level, including foundation years, pre-sessional English and diploma courses, the Home Office requires a SELT at B1 unless the sponsor is a Higher Education Provider assessing you for a degree-level course that follows. For these courses book IELTS for UKVI or another SELT.

  3. Step 3: Check the route

Student visa: see steps 1 and 2. India Young Professionals Scheme: SELT at B1, so IELTS for UKVI. Partner and Fiancé: SELT at A1, so IELTS Life Skills or IELTS for UKVI. Settlement: SELT at B1, rising to B2 from March 2027. High Potential Individual: B2 by SELT or an ECCTIS confirmed degree.

  4. Step 4: Compare cost and availability

IELTS Academic costs about ₹18,000 in Punjab and is available weekly in Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Patiala. IELTS for UKVI costs about ₹18,500 to ₹19,500 and runs at a smaller set of UKVI-approved centres, mostly Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar. Check the IDP booking page for current prices.

  5. Step 5: Decide on paper or computer

Both tests are available on computer with results in 3 to 5 days, or on paper with results in 13 days. The score is identical. Computer delivery helps when the CAS deadline is close.

  6. Step 6: Match the score to the CAS

The university writes the English requirement on the CAS. The Home Office minimum for degree level is B2, which is IELTS 5.5 in each component. Many universities ask for 6.0 or 6.5 overall. Your result must meet the higher of the two.

  7. Step 7: Keep the Test Report Form number

The university and the Home Office verify results online using the TRF number. Upload a clear scan and keep the original. Results are valid for 2 years from the test date.

Questions

My university accepts IELTS Academic 6.0. Do I also need IELTS for UKVI?

No, if the university is a Higher Education Provider with a track record and the course is at degree level or above. The CAS will say the university assessed your English. If your course is a pre-sessional or foundation course, ask the university which test it needs for the visa.

Is IELTS for UKVI harder?

No. The paper is the same. The only difference is the test-day identity process and the certificate format.

Can I use PTE Academic instead?

Yes for most universities. For routes where the Home Office needs a SELT, the version must be PTE Academic UKVI, booked through the UKVI option on the Pearson site.

What if my IELTS is older than 2 years?

The Home Office does not accept it. Universities often accept older results for admission, but the visa application needs a result within 2 years of the application date.

Is there an IELTS waiver for Indian students?

Many universities waive IELTS for students with 70 percent or more in English in Class 12 from CBSE, ICSE or some state boards. That is a university decision. For degree-level courses at a Higher Education Provider it also satisfies the visa, because the university assesses English itself.

Which test does the India Young Professionals Scheme need?

A SELT at B1, so IELTS for UKVI with 4.0 in each component, PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert SELT or Skills for English UKVI. A degree taught in English with an ECCTIS statement also works.
