# Graduate route becomes 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027

Graduate route permission granted on applications made from 1 January 2027 lasts 18 months instead of 24; applications submitted before that date keep two years. Indian students finishing in late 2026 should apply as soon as the university reports the award.

The Graduate route lets a student who completed a UK degree stay to work or look for work without a sponsor. The immigration white paper shortened it, and the rules fix the change to applications made on or after 1 January 2027. PhD graduates keep three years.

The application can be made only after the university reports successful completion to UKVI, and only while the Student visa is valid. For a September 2025 master's that ends in September 2026 with results in November, the window before 1 January 2027 is real but short; the planner works it out from the course end date.
